MTK Client & Python Utilities: Complete Beginner Setup Guide for Low-Level MediaTek BROM Operations

Over the past several years, servicing MediaTek (MTK) smartphones has become increasingly challenging due to the introduction of hardware-level Secure Boot (SLA) and Dynamic Asset Authentication (DAA). Traditional flashing utilities like standard SP Flash Tool often halt with Error 1041 (Authentication Required). In response, the open-source engineering community developed MTK Clientβ€”a powerful Python-based utility created by security researcher Bjoern Kerler.

MTK Client communicates directly with the MediaTek processor’s internal Boot ROM (BROM) over USB. It can bypass SLA/DAA authentication, dump complete physical flash memory images, read GUID partition tables, unlock bootloaders, and flash individual partitions without requiring commercial service tokens. This beginner-friendly setup guide explains how to install and utilize MTK Client on Windows.

What Makes MTK Client Essential for Modern Technicians?

  • Universal BROM Handshake: Exploits low-level USB control transfer vulnerabilities (such as Kamakiri and Amonet) to gain arbitrary read/write memory access directly in the Boot ROM.
  • SLA / DAA Security Bypass: Allows standard flashing tools (SP Flash Tool) to operate without requiring authorized service center credentials.
  • Full Chip Memory Dumps: Can extract exact byte-for-byte backups of boot, nvram, super, or the complete eMMC/UFS storage for forensic or recovery purposes.
  • Partition Table Manipulation: Prints the exact GPT structure and can write or erase partitions directly.

Prerequisites & Environment Installation on Windows

Step 1: Install Python 3

  1. Download the latest official Python 3 installer (version 3.10 or 3.11 recommended) from python.org.
  2. Run the installer. CRITICAL: Check the box at the bottom that says "Add python.exe to PATH" before clicking Install Now.

Step 2: Install Git & Clone MTK Client

  1. Download and install Git for Windows from git-scm.com.
  2. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and clone the official MTK Client repository:
    git clone https://github.com/bkerler/mtkclient.git
  3. Navigate into the downloaded folder:
    cd mtkclient
  4. Install all required Python library dependencies:
    pip install -r requirements.txt

Step 3: Driver Setup (UsbDk & LibUSB)

MTK Client requires direct, low-level access to USB transfer endpoints:

  1. Download and install UsbDk (USB Development Kit) 64-bit installer from its official GitHub repository.
  2. Restart your computer. UsbDk enables Python to hook the MediaTek USB serial interface before Windows assigns default COM port handlers.

Core MTK Client Operations

1. Connecting the Device in BROM Mode

For all MTK Client commands, the connection procedure is identical:

  1. Enter the desired command in the terminal (MTK Client will display: "Waiting for device...").
  2. Power off the smartphone completely.
  3. Press and hold both Volume Up + Volume Down buttons.
  4. Insert the USB cable. Once detected, release the buttons immediately.

2. Read & Print Partition Table (GPT)

Verifies connection and prints the entire flash layout:

python mtk.py printgpt

3. Dumping (Backing Up) Partitions

# Dumps the boot partition to a file named boot.img
python mtk.py r boot boot.img

# Dumps critical NVRAM network calibration
python mtk.py r nvram nvram_backup.bin
python mtk.py r nvdata nvdata_backup.bin

# Dumps the entire physical flash memory (Full Raw Dump)
python mtk.py rl ./full_dump/

4. Writing (Flashing) Partitions

# Writes a clean boot image to repair a bootloop
python mtk.py w boot boot.img

# Writes the dynamic super partition
python mtk.py w super super.img

5. Erasing Partitions (Clean Reset)

# Erases userdata to resolve persistent encryption locks
python mtk.py e userdata

# Erases metadata
python mtk.py e metadata

Bypassing SLA/DAA for SP Flash Tool Integration

If you prefer to flash a full stock firmware package using the graphical interface of SP Flash Tool:

  1. In MTK Client, run the background payload server:
    python mtk.py payload
  2. Connect the phone with Volume buttons held. MTK Client will patch the BROM registers and state: "Device is in BROM mode, protection disabled".
  3. Keep the phone connected! Open SP Flash Tool.
  4. Under Options > Option > Connection, set Connection to UART (or select the newly created LibUSB COM port with Baud Rate 921600).
  5. Click Download in SP Flash Tool. Flashing will proceed immediately without Auth errors.

Troubleshooting Common MTK Client Errors

Error Message Probable Cause Solution
No module named 'usb' Python dependencies were not installed in global environment. Execute pip install pyusb pyserial pycryptodome in terminal.
Device disconnects after 2 seconds Phone dropped into preloader charging mode before BROM handshake. Ensure UsbDk is installed; hold both Volume buttons firmly before plugging cable.
Access Denied (Windows Permission) Terminal lacks administrator privileges to claim USB interface. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.
